Topicmarks gets acquired by social network Tagged

Topicmarks

Topicmarks, a semantic / machine learning startup we covered here on EDUKWEST has been acquired by Tagged, one of the remaining social networks besides Facebook.

For us at EDUKWEST, Topicmarks has been one of the most interesting startups this year so we are kind of surprised that the concept did not survive on its own though according to the Topicmarks website the service will still operate as its own website “for the foreseeable future”.

According to Business Insider

Tagged plans to incorporate the machine learning technology into its algorithm. “Facebook’s algorithm is about surfacing the best content from your friends. Facebook is a content-matching algorithm,” Tseng said. “Google is for web pages, Netflix is for movies, ours is for people. We call it internally a Pandora for people.”

Instead this is the first time you hear about Topicmarks: the startup created a service that scans long form content and then automatically summarizes it. The technology is especially interesting for students who need to read a lot of texts. With Topicmarks smart summaries, they are able to get an overview in just a couple of minutes.
