Thomas Whitby of The Educator’s PLN & #edchat

Pursuing my aim of bringing together the various groups in online education I invited Thomas Whitby for a talk on EDUKWEST as he stands for the integration of technology in the classic education space.

I have been connected with Tom for about two years now and I am following his way on Twitter and his Educator’s PLN. I am convinced that it can only be benificial for the whole industry when we start discussing with one another, sometimes controversial and not having the same opinion but always in a respectful way as we all want to change education as it shows today.

Both, Thomas and I think it cannot be healthy to only repeat established opinions and wear down the stones but to get a bigger picture it is inevitable for an educator whatever his / her background may be to connect and learn and engage with the others. Thanks to internet, Social Media and initiatives like the weekly #edchat on Twitter this has become far easier and therefore we see things happen today that seemed impossible three years ago.

Dave Schappell TeachStreet

Dave Schappell

My guest on the first episode of review:ed was Dave Schappell, Founder and CEO of TeachStreet with a guest appearance of Stella, the French bulldog.

Dave and I were talking about the iPad and how it might change the way we teach and learn, the tensions between Apple and Adobe about the use of Flash on Apple products, Ning and the end of its freemium model, Groupon and the different clones around the globe, Zinch and its launch of a platform in China and finally Pearson and its M&A strategy as a possible exit for education start ups.

Gagan Biyani of Udemy.com

In this interview I talked to Gagan Biyani, Co-Founder of Udemy.com – the Academy of You.

Udemy provides teachers, tutors or any other sort of educator with a fully functional online school that can be set up in a couple of minutes. In the interview Gagan tells how he met his co-founders, what drives him and the team and he also gives us a presentation of the platform.

Udemy believes that teachers should also be able to teach their audience when they are not available live. Therefore the platform developed some great tools to deliver engaging asynchronous content for learners.

Frédéric Tibout of English-Attack.com

In this interview I talked with Frédéric Tibout, Co-Founder of English Attack! a new learning platform that is focused on entertainment learning only. I met him personally after this year’s TechCrunch Paris event.

Frédéric and his Co-Founder Paul Maglione have both a track record in the entertainment industry for years and worked for top companies like Activision Blizzard, CNN and Apple. English Attack! is targeting learners of English that already have a foundation in the language, are between 15 and 35 years of age and have no interest in a classic curriculum based learning environment.

On English Attack! they will learn with interactive exercises, movie clips and music videos. There will be a community and later on premium features. During the interview Frédéric gives us an exclusive preview of the website and its different features and functions.

Frédéric and Paul would like to get as much feedback as possible on the product, so if you are in the target group feel free to sign up for the beta. English Attack! is also open for investors, so feel free to get in touch.

Gregory Tappero of TutorsBox.com

In this interview I met Gregory Tappero, Co-Founder of EdoBoard.com at the TechCrunch Paris event. We sat down to talk about the newest product TutorsBox.com which is basically a backend application for the EdoBoard classroom.

It enables schools and institutions to manage different teachers, students and classes in one interface and TutorsBox also delivers real time analytics of the lessons given.

There is a two week trial for interested schools or institutions. If the user decides to use the product after the trial there is a setup fee of around 2000 Euro and a price of 5 Euro per hour of usage.
