HEDLINE: Viridis Learning launches Online Courses for the Middle-Skill Workforce

Viridis Learning, an online education technology platform for training and placing the middle-skill workforce, launched its new platform on Tuesday.

The learning platform offers exclusive education content from sources such as industry trade associations and internal corporate training programs.

Key Takeaway

Founded by Felix W. Ortiz III, Viridis Learning aims to provide the middle-skill sector with workers who have more than a high school level education and less than a four-year degree. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that 45 percent of the jobs added to the U.S. economy over the next decade will require workers with this level of skill according to Ortiz.

Other than MOOC platforms or course providers like, Udemy or Skillshare which focus on higher education and knowledge economy workers, Viridis offers courses for the middle-skill workforce in the key industry clusters like customer service, restaurant & food service, retail, transportation, hospitality, construction and so on.

Courses offered include Bell Attendant, Created through a partnership with the American Hotel and Lodging Association or Energy Management and Controls with BOMI International and cost $100 to enroll.

The Viridis platform also features algorithms that analyze the candidate’s goals, personality, skill set and certificates. Based on that data Viridis places users in jobs that maximize their potential. Global employer partners of Viridis include UPS, Inc., The Coca-Cola Company and Hyatt while Viridis also works with regional companies including Ted’s Montana Grill, New York-based Juice Press.

During Viridis’ pilot program, users had a 93% completion rate, 70% placement rate and a 65% retention rate.

Viridis Learning raised an undisclosed amount in a venture round in October 2013 with participation of Comcast Ventures, ULU Ventures, Expansion VC and others.
