Piazza, an online student network and peer learning platform, announced the launch of a new campus recruitment portal called Piazza Careers which lets recruiters search and message students on the network.
Piazza also announced a $8 million Series B led by Khosla Ventures with participation of Bessemer Ventures. The round was already closed in late 2013.
This round brings the total funding raised by Piazza since its launch in 2009 (official launch in 2011) to $15.5 million. Keith Rabois of Khosla Ventures will join Piazza’s board of directors.
Piazza’s userbase has grown significantly over the past years. Between the 2011-2012 and 2012-2013 academic years the number of students grew from 236,000 to 762,000 which is an increase of 223%.
According to Keith Rabois one of the unique factors of Piazza is the huge pool of engineering talent present on the network, a group that is usually absent from other job sites and the driver behind the launch of Piazza Careers. More than half the undergraduates — including almost all of the engineering majors — at Stanford, Berkeley, MIT, Carnegie Mellon, Princeton and Georgia Tech use Piazza. Rabois told the WSJ that
“At LinkedIn, we were never able to attract recent graduates at scale, or become the default employment platform for technical talent.”
To protect student privacy the service is opt-in and Piazza might eventually limit the number of emails a recruiter can send to students on the platform. The service is already used by some companies in the Silicon Valley including Box, Hearsay Social, Palantir, SpaceX and Yelp.
Students on Piazza currently come from 60 different countries and are highly engaged with the service. According to Piazza they tend to spend 2-3 hours each night on the network.
“No other company has engaged college students the way that Piazza has. The most talented young people in the country rely on it every day for learning, which is the single most important thing they do.”
Part of the funding will also be used to spread into other verticals than science and engineering.
