NewSchools Seed Fund, the early stage branch of NewSchools Venture Fund, announced that it has closed a $12 million round to continue its investments in seed stage edtech startups in the K-12 space.
Since its launch NewSchools Seed Fund has invested in 22 edtech startups and led 17 of those seed rounds. The fund wants to invest into 55 startups by the end of 2015.
More than half of the edtech startups NewSchools Seed Fund invested in are founded by former teachers. According to the fund’s website, the portfolio startups now reach a combined 22 million parents, teachers and students in all 50 states.
The focus areas of NewSchools Seed Fund are big data, platforms, classroom tools, digital content and special populations. In 2013 59 of the edtech investments in the United States were seed stage
