Andreas Spading
As mentioned before, this week on EDUKWEST is dedicated to video-based learning and I had the pleasure to sit down for a talk with Andreas Spading, co-founder of sofatutor.
sofatutor is a Berlin-based startup that provides quick and easy-to-follow video lessons for students from age 10 up to university level. The current video base consists of 5000+ videos in 18 subjects. According to their website sofatutor has served some 30.000 customers until today.
As a producer of educational video content myself I discovered sofatutor early on in their cycle as a startup. What I can see is that they have focused more on the solid educational structure which is aligned to the curriculum of the different German states and the production quality of the videos over time. They recently even introduced their own studio where interested educators can now produce their sofatutor videos at a highly professional level.
What I like is their innovative businessmodel. Students pay a monthly flatrate and can access as many videos and subjects as they like. The monthly rate is then split amongst the different videos creators accordingly, meaning depending how often their different videos have been watched over that period of time.
sofatutor plan on collaborating with traditional publishers more closely in the future: the benefits for both sides are obvious. The sofatutor team can benefit from the name of established brands and also their content. The publishers get a facelift and position themselves as solutions ready for learning 2.0.
