I already wrote about the Startup Weekend EDU in Seattle end of August. Now, this date is coming upon us, and thus I sat down with one of its leaders Dave Schapell of TeachStreet to have a talk about what it’s going to be like.
If you’re familiar with how Startup Weekends usually work, the EDU vertical is not much different. The first 6h are dedicated to teambuilding (Friday evening, Sep 30th), so that the team then have the full next 48h to work on the projects.
The organizers have pulled together a list with all APIs available in education, so that the participants really have the widest variety of projects possible to work on, so not only from the startups organizing or participating. Another innovation I very much like is the fact that anyone (including you, the reader of this blog post) can post a problem they see in education and that can be voted on.
Also, taking a look at the list of speakers and mentors it’s exciting to see what high profile people are being passionate about education change for the better with Mitch Kapor holding the keynote. The official site gives you a complete overview of all organizers, speakers and mentors.
Some tickets are still available for the event taking place from Sep 30 to Oct 2 in Seattle.
Being passionate about education, I believe that this is one of the best things that happen to our industry as Startup Weekend puts together people from various different backgrounds and not only the typical educator. Having said that I think we’re going to see some exciting products coming out of Startup Weekend EDU Seattle, and I already committed to give the three winners a platform here on EDUKWEST and do an interview with them.
