EDUKWEST #71 with Josh Koppel of ScrollMotion

If you read my latest post on KirstenWinkler.com about the future of reading you will have noticed that the last part deals with the market for digital textbooks and its potential.

To get more educated on that topic I did an EDUKWEST interview with Josh Koppel, Co-Founder and Chief Creative Officer at ScrollMotion.

When hearing the term digital textbooks today, Kno and Inkling immediately come to mind. ScrollMotion might be a little less known as a brand in education but only for the reason that they don’t target the end user of digital textbooks, what makes them distinct from Inkling and Kno.

ScrollMotion is one of the major developers of digital books and magazines with more than 10.000 apps in the iTunes App Store. The company is closely working together with the publishers, and this in various different markets. For instance ScrollMotion is behind the iPad version of the Esquire and Oprah Winfrey magazines and built applications for National Geographic and Disney.

The secret sauce of ScrollMotion is the ability to create highly interactive and engaging content by the bulk, the platforms they develop for the different publishers and brands are highly scalable.

Now, in our tinterview Josh and I talked of course about ScrollMotion’s activity in education, namely the project with the renown education publisher HMH. The task was to bring the Algebra 1 textbook to live. The work had to be done within three months only until the final result was planned to be tested in schools which once again underlines the apparent ability of ScrollMotion to deliver results very quickly. Below our interview I embedded a video demonstration of the finished product.

The first results out of the classroom testing are promising, stating that more than 90% of students in the particular classes succeed with the interactive version compared to the 60% success rate in an average class.

I think ScrollMotion’s unique experience in building e-magazines and applications for children and teenagers combined with the freedom for the publishers to sell the textbooks directly to the end users sans middleman are pretty competitive advantages.

If this brief introduction made you appetite for more you should take in the whole 20-minute-interview with Josh and also read the article I mentioned at the top of this post.
