EdTech Startup Funding Special: Approved Colleges, Exo Labs and Dub Labs

This is a funding special as an addition to our weekly Edtech Startup News, covering some of the smaller rounds of the last couple of weeks.

In this special edition we take a look at Approved Colleges, an online degree resource site, Exo Labs, which creates cameras that connect microscopes and iPhones and Dub Labs, a mobile platform for colleges.

Approved Colleges raises $450k

Approved CollegesApproved Colleges, an online education resource and degree comparison portal for adults, raised $450k from a group of five investors according to the SEC filing. The funding was closed in February 2013. The startup had previously raised $175k in 2012.

Founded by Tony Huffman, Approved Colleges aims to help busy, working adults find, research, and compare online degrees, certificates, courses and training. Approved Colleges offers a listing of accredited institutions that have online programs available in the United States.

Exo Labs raises $343k

Exo LabsSeattle-based Exo Labs raised $343k in debt funding according to a SEC filing. The startup had previously raised a $640k Seed Round in 2012, $36k on Kickstarter and a $1.25 million Series A in 2013.

Exo Labs creates camera devices that connect microscopes to iPads and iPhones. Through the free app teachers and students can explore and share their discoveries. The Exo Labs camera is compatible with every microscope and costs $395. Through changing the lens the camera can also be used as a standalone device.

As the picture is displayed on the iPhone or iPad screen, the experience of looking through a microscope becomes a shared one as multiple students can watch the screen together.

Dub Labs raises $55k

Dub LabsNew York based Dub Labs raised $55k in debt funding according to a SEC filing. Dub Labs creates mobile websites and applications for schools, colleges and universities.

Through the apps students and faculty can access course registration, exam and course schedules, assignments, course discussions etc.The apps also features admission related features like campus tours and CRM, general announcements, maps, social media, events and everything else that is related to school life.

Dub Labs already brought 170 institutions online. The mobile sites and apps can seamlessly be integrated in the existing SIS and LMS and can be up and running in between two to eight weeks depending on the complexity. Pricing for Dub Labs services start at $7.000.
