Overview: The two Edtech Startups in the TechStars London 2014 Cohort

TechStars London announced its second cohort, so let’s take this as motivation to take a look at the education startups among the participants.

Besides the three-months accelerator program, TechStars invests $118K in each company through $18K in seed funding and an optional $100K convertible debt note.

This is the second year TechStars is hosting its accelerator program in London. It is the only city outside of the US among the seven Techstars Programs offered. For London’s 2014 cohort eleven startups were accepted out of 1500 applicants, two of which are edtech startups.

Overview: The Seven Edtech Startups in co.lab’s Second Cohort

Today let’s take a look at the seven edtech startups that form co.lab’s second cohort. They were chosen out of 60 applications total and will go through a four month program.

Co.lab itself is an education technology accelerator program founded by, the independent not-for-profit branch of Zynga, Inc. and New Schools Venture Fund in 2013.

It focuses on innovative approaches in the digital games space for PK-12 students and teachers.

LearnLaunchX Boston

Overview: The seven Edtech Startups in LearnLaunchX Winter Cohort

Editor’s Note: This post has first been published on edcetera – straight talk on edtech.

LearnLaunchX, the Boston based edtech accelerator announced the seven startups that will take part in this year’s Winter cohort. The startups receive up to $18k in seed funding, free workspace for up to six months, access to the LearnLaunchX mentors and other perks.

The goal of the accelerator is to bring these early-stage startups to a point where they have validated their business model and are therefore be attractive to investors. The demo day of the winter cohort is set for May 2014.

Incubating the Era of the Flipped Edtech Startup

Editor’s Note: This post has first been published on edcetera – straight talk on edtech.

Remember the discussion about a possible edtech bubble we had at the end of 2012? If you worried back then, the recent launch of at least four new edtech incubators and accelerators might add to this nagging feeling.

To me, it’s merely another sign that education technology is adapting to the general rules of the technology startup world. In 2012, we had the flipped classroom; in 2013, we will see the flipped edtech startup.
