AcademicPub adds 22 New Publishers to its Content Library

AcademicPub

AcademicPub is an online platform for college professors that enables them to create custom print or digital textbooks. This way professors can pick the content relevant to their course only which leads to much lower prices for the students when they purchase the books.

Launched in April 2011 by SharedBook Inc., AcademicPub started with less than 20 publishers but the platform quickly attracted new partners and now offers copyright-cleared material from over 100 publishers including

Brookings Institution Press, Columbia CaseWorks of Columbia Business School, Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing, Georgetown University Press, GlobalData, J. Ross Publishers, Liverpool University Press, Morgan & Claypool, New Academic Science, New York University Press, Princeton Architectural Press, Rowman & Littlefield Publishers, Transaction Publishers, University of California Press, University of Chicago Press, University of Iowa Press, University of Virginia Press, University Press of Kentucky, Wilfred Laurier University Press, and Yale University Press.

Professors can search the AcademicPub content library for copyright-cleared articles, textbook chapters, scholarly research and cases. There are over 2 million units to choose from at date. Through the Scholar Collection researchers and professors can also add independently authored material to the content library and set royalty payments.

The process of creating a custom textbooks appears to be pretty straight forward. Professors start by creating a project. Then they need to

1. Add your first piece of content
  • Choose from the web, or your own content (syllabus, lecture, article, etc.) or from the AcademicPub Content Library
  • Use AcademicPub to get real-time copyright clearance
2. Review the real-time running total
  • Each item is priced upon entry, and the total is updated as you add to your custom book
3. Repeat
  • Add as much content as you like, from any source you choose
4. Preview your custom book
  • You can see your work at any step along the way, just as your students will see it, and make changes to the order, or add/delete items as required
5. Distribute to students
  • You provide a link, and the students can retrieve their custom book immediately! Or send the link to your bookstore for distribution.

According to a recent article on The Chronicle of Higher Education, many students just saved $1 when choosing e-textbooks. Most parts of these textbooks are never being used during the course hence the possibility to pay only for the content you know you will need,  has a true potential to cut down costs.
